When the pandemic hit by the end of 2019 I was quite worried things might get worse, therefore, I decided to go to the farthest I can go, merely to escape the virus. I headed to North Europe, mainly to Stockholm, Sweden in which was my first stop before I moved down to Copenhagen, Denmark and then to Slangerup. I had no anticipation for the pandemic or when would it end! Within 4 months the virus was right at my escape destination .. already.

I winded up at a farm in Slangerup, Frederikssund – a small town in the North West of Copenhagen. It is where I met Verner – a Danish professor in agriculture, a man who has put all his time and energy into developing his plantation that mainly grows organic apples.

For more than 30 years Verner has been working on bio-dynamic researches to develop his organic farming practices. Even though he’s in his early 70s but he has a heart of a young man that never loses enthusiasm and hope for tomorrow. This standpoint has kept him motivated throughout his life, upholding the aim to improve the modern methods of agriculture. It is worthy to mention that all his researches are derived from the Austrian philosopher, Rudolf Steiner (1861-1925) the founder of the bio-dynamic approach.

One of the most interesting experiments, was by burying cow horns in soil for a certain amount of time then soak them in water, add natural fertilisers and create stable swirl stirs both clockwise and counterclockwise for 60 minutes continuously. According to Verner’s past experiences, this method could significantly improve the plantation time and quality.

Steiner’s philosophy on Agriculture has extended to a spiritual scientific approach “Anthroposophy” in which his prominence has risen. He came to the conclusion that western civilization would gradually bring destruction to itself and the earth if it did not begin to develop an objective understanding of the spiritual world and its interrelationship with the physical world. Steiner’s spiritual-scientific methods and insights have given birth to practical holistic innovations in many fields, including education, banking, medicine, psychology, the arts and, not least, agriculture.
